Kbin Mbin

When the creator of the Kbin fediverse platform vanished under the load of the 2023 Reddit exodus, the biggest Kbin instance forked the project to keep its community alive. Kbin is now effectively dead; Mbin is the only maintained line.

What it is

PHP/Symfony application forked from Kbin with federation via ActivityPub, supporting both link aggregation (microblogging, magazines) and following profiles. The Mbin effort added community governance, test coverage, and a much faster release cadence than the original's long-bottlenecked solo development.

The story

Kbin was created in January 2021 by Polish developer Ernest Wiśniewski as a federated link aggregator and microblogging platform - a decentralized Reddit. For two years it was a solo project with a small but enthusiastic community. Then came June 2023: the Reddit API protests drove millions of users to look for alternatives, and Kbin's flagship instance, kbin.social, exploded from a few thousand to more than 40,000 accounts in weeks. The single-developer bottleneck that had been a curiosity became a crisis: issues piled up, pull requests sat unmerged, and the developer was frequently unreachable, eventually explaining that he was dealing with health problems and burnout.

By October 2023 the community's patience was gone. The maintainer of kbin.social, Jerry Bell, forked the project as Mbin, and within days the largest instance - fedia.io - announced it was switching over, briefly announcing a shutdown of its Kbin instance before reversing course to avoid losing its community. The fork was led by Melroy van den Berg, who introduced a community governance model called C4. The original Kbin project had its last activity in late 2024 and its site is now offline; Mbin continues to ship, with version 1.10 released in mid-2026 and multiple instances federating actively.

Key people

Ernest Wiśniewski
Creator of Kbin
“Single-developer bottlenecks were a feature until the Reddit exodus made them a catastrophe.”
Melroy van den Berg
Mbin project lead and fork organizer
“The community needed a project it could actually contribute to.”
Jerry Bell
Operator of kbin.social, the largest Kbin instance
“We are forking Kbin to keep our community alive.”

Impact

Mbin kept the Kbin fediverse alive and gave it a governance model the original never had. The fork is now the reference implementation of the 'fediverse Reddit' idea, and its C4 governance process has become the standard argument for why federation needs community ownership.

Lesson: The bus factor is the only metric that matters for a federated platform: kbin.social was one person's health problem away from killing a community of tens of thousands. Mbin won by inverting the model - the instance operators became the maintainers, not the customers of a single developer.
