A Switch emulator forked from Yuzu days after Nintendo sued the original into extinction. It promised to be different, then died in a week of infighting before Nintendo could finish the job.
C++ emulator forked from the Yuzu codebase; shared the same legal exposure as the original since it had to decrypt Nintendo's proprietary keys and run encrypted game dumps. Its final release was version 0.0.3, barely functional. Forks of Suyu, most notably Sudachi, carried the code forward after the original died.
Yuzu was the gold standard of Switch emulation. By early 2024 it could play the latest releases at full speed, was named the best-emulated console by Nintendo (an unofficial, ironic award), and had moved development to a company, Tropic Haze, to manage the legal exposure. That exposure came due in February 2024: Nintendo sued Tropic Haze for facilitating piracy, and within a week the company settled for USD 2.4 million and agreed to stop development, remove the repos, and surrender the domains. Yuzu and its sibling Citra were gone.
Suyu was announced less than 48 hours later, claiming it was 'formed in Yuzu's Discord' (the record does not support this) and insisting it would not make money and would ban piracy talk. Led by a self-appointed founder using the handle Crimson_Hawk, it attracted mainstream press in the first week of March 2024. Within two weeks GitLab issued a DMCA takedown and the project moved to a private fork. In April the entire development team publicly walked out over the founder's conduct and the project's legal exposure, calling the code 'radioactive' in a public pastebin. The founder froze the project days later. A final DMCA notice in July 2024 blocked the GitHub repository; the project has been dead since.

Suyu's collapse validated Nintendo's legal strategy and had a chilling effect on emulator development: Ryujinx, the other major Switch emulator, was shut down the same year without a lawsuit at all, after a direct approach by Nintendo. Emulation has since moved to legally cautious, region-locked projects.
